Early Morning Storm

This was done in acrylic on 18x24 canvas at the Matthews Alive, in Matthews NC about 6 years ago.

Railroad Station with friends

Richard painted this colorful painting on canvas. The idea came from a picture of an old railroad station taken by his daughter. The Flemingville Railroad Station was once part of the Lehigh Valley Railroad that ran between Ithaca N.Y. and Owego. The painting is looking south toward Owego. A friendly collie dog comes from the left and the child from the right and they meet on the railroad tracks. The child drops the gloves in the snow to touch the dog.

1934 Chrysler "Roadster" Pedal car

Richard painted this acrylic painting of himself and his peddle car. In 1939 while living on Andrew Avenue in Binghamton, N.Y., his father caught his son standing on the front bumper, washing the windshield, and took this black and white picture. This 1934 Steelcraft car was made in Cleveland , Ohio, and had working headlights with batteries under the dash. Richard younger sister would sit on the hood while Richard would peddle her up and down the driveway.

Beach Umbrella

Richard was visiting Holden Beach, N.C. when he got this idea for this acrylic painting. The storm in the background would make most people put up their umbrella and leave. This very colorful umbrella with two chairs stood out sharpley with the dark clouds filling the background. The story tells of a couple who walked away from their spot and would return for the umbrella and chairs. This was not the case, as the couple just was not painted in the painting.

1937 Studebaker at home

The 1937 Studebaker"President" has been parked for years. So many years, the trunk lid has fallen off. This springtime painting of acrylic was done by Richard to surround the old car and house with some new life of spingtime flowers. The old building was once a house and now serves as a pottery business in Seagrove, N.C. The car was sitting along the road, for sale, near where Richard lives.

1950's Nash Metropolitan

This Acrylic painting is of a 1954 and 1958 Nash Metropolitan mini cars made in England for Nash. The two old rust covered cars, Richard saw for sale along the road near his home. The old two story house was abandonment by the owner, both showing no life, is the story Richard is telling. The Springtime flowers and trees bring life maybe for a short time. The walkway stone bridge is the only man made item to survive in good shape after the family had left.

Treasure Mountain, Colorado

A member of our church was showing me pictures of her trip. I askrd her if I could paint this one. I painted it in acylic.

While visiting Nova Scotia we saw this house with pond. In 2009 at the "Matthews Alive," I painted this picture at the Matthews Artist Guild, Art show. In 2011 I added this Hudson car that I saw at a car show. It was painted with Acrylic.

Snowstorm-Equinunk, Pennsylvania

In 1939 my father took this picture in black and white. It was the Jump family farm in Equinunk, Pa. Seventy years later Richard painted this same scene in Acrylic

Cidermill Wintertime

Richard's daughter Cindy spent a nice summer day at this Cider Mill. When Richard painted with Acrylic he added snow and a lady clearing a path.

1940's Kids and Toys

In 1940 Richard's parents took lots of photos of their children. While living on Andrew Avenue, Richard and his sister spent a lot of time with their toys outdoors. So almost 70 years later combining several of the photos together he painted this acrylic painting of himself 3 times and once with his sister.

Wyoming Mountain View

Richard's two sons Shawn and Vern wanted to see this mountain view in Wyoming. Shawn in the red sweater was being watched carefully by his mother. She finally told him to get back from the edge. Meanwhile, his older brother was slowly moving his feet closer and closer to the edge. This painting was done in acrylic.

Airlie Gardens North Carolina

Richard painted in acrylic this small lake at Airlie Gardens in North Carolina.

Virginia City, Nevada

In the late 1990's I traveled to this old mining town. The old buildings sure were interesting. In acrylic I painted this 24x36 scene as it might have looked in the 1920's. I took away the modern cars and paved road. Then I added three old cars, my neighbor's collie, my wife, her sister and brother-in -law. I even added a miner's donkey and a man and lady. The three buildings you can see every brick. Richard

Banjo Jimmy- Lancastor Pennsylvania

While visiting Lancastor County in the late 1990's Richard saw this colorful scene with great music. The buildings and signs and the musical instruments just added to the delight of the crowd, and this scene he just had to paint. This 24x36 painting was done in acrylic

Springtime Canadian Rockies

1950 My dad took his family to the Baniff-Jasper National Park. One morning he stopped the car to take this beautiful picture. I remember the valley floor was a bright yellow. In 1953 at 17, I painted this scene with three bears in the forground. I decided to paint the same scene in 2010 with flowers in the foreground.

Shoshone River-Cody Wyoming

In 1973 Richard took his wife and four children on a western trip from Pennsylvania. This beautiful canyon near Cody was full of color. Richard stopped his 1972 Dodge van to get this picture. About 40 years later he decided to paint this river flowing from Cody Dam. It was painted in Acrylic on a 24x36 canvas.

Catsburg Store, North Carolina

A friend of mine showed me a picture of this old store from the early 1900's. This store was built in 1920 on the Hamlin Road and the Old Oxford Highway in Durham County, North Carolina. This friend from church asked me to paint this old building from the area where he grew up. I asked him if I could add this buick touring car, three women, a child and an old bloodhound. I painted this in acrylic and he bought the painting. I liked the old building so I painted this second painting for myself. Richard

Catsburg Store 2007

Sunset Kiawah Island

My wife and I celebrated our 50th anniversity at Kiawah Island. One night while walking on the beach this sunset filled the sky. I took a picture of it and then painted it in acrylic.

Holden Beach Sunset

A few years ago while walking the beach at Holden Beach, North Carolina this huge sunset made me grab my camera and take some pictures. From this I painted this acrylic painting.

The Carver at work

I saw this interesting barn in Mint Hill, North Carolina and wanted to put it on canvas. Then a man showed me a picture his wife had taken of three dogs laying in the back of an old pick-up truck. Then from Indian Trail, North Carolina I met Buddy the wood carver. I put them all three subjects together on this 24x36 acrylic painting. Some of Buddy's woodcarvings are in the painting. Richard

One day I saw Buddy outside his shop in Indian Trail, North Carolina carving. I saw Buddy as a very interesting subject to paint. So I painted him twice on canvas with acrylic. Richard

Greyhound on Sunset Beach

My son and his family once owned this good looking greyhound. With acrylic I painted this dog enjoying a walk on the sandy beach. Richard

Peggy Cove, Nova Scotia

Richard visited Nova Scotia about 3 times. After traveling the coast of the island, Richard saw Peggy Cove and painted two paintings the same two building from opposite sides in acrylic.

Nova Scotia Fishing Dock

Richard added a dog and a few cats as pets to the dock as they seem to follow the food source. This was an acrylic painting of a very foggy day.

Ecuador man with Blowgun

During the 1960's and 1970's my father Warren H. Miles traveled to the jungles of Ecuador to view and take pictures of the people of the jungle. When I saw this picture he took of this man, I wanted to make a oil painting of him. I changed the backgound to make it more closely to fit the dark jungle. This painting hung at my father's house nearly fifteen years. The blowgun was given as a gift to my father with many straw like spears, that he is holding in his left hand.

My daughter Cindy took this photograph of three Mallards standing on ice along the river edge in Binghamton, New York.

Kestrel Hawk

My father took this picture of this Kestrel Hawk sometime called "the sparrow hawk", is a small Falcon. It was so beautiful I had to put it on canvas.

Richard Miles Artist - Early Beginning

When Richard was in second grade in Vestal Central High School, Vestal, New York. His teacher Miss Hunter gave each student a 8 inch wooden plate. Then with crayons they would paint a picture and then it would be completed with a coat of shellac. When it was done it would go to their parents for Christmas 1944. Miss Hunter did show the whole class Richard's plate. This plate shows two squirrels having fun with a basket of walnuts. Around the edge of the plate you will notice a orange pattern Richard had designed.

Business Window painting

When Richard was 17 his art teacher from high school, Mr. Williams gave Richard some work as an artist. Richard had this motorbike which he would put his art supplies in a bag. Then with his right hand he would grip the bag and trottle and take off to paint their windows. He would ride to different places and would paint Christmas scenes to make a few dollars. You can see Richard through the glass.

The Old Jump farmhouse

The Jump family farmhouse was in Equinunk, Pennsylvania. It was built about 1860 and burned down in 1916 from a chimmey fire. Richard painted this acrylic from an old photo

Richard Warren Miles Jr.

Richard's oldest son Rick, loved to go to the old family Jump farm in Equinunk, Pa. He loved the five tier waterfall on the 300 acre farm. At age 17 Rick passed away from a brain hemorrhage in 1975. Richard asked the church if he could paint a wall mural in the church baptistry in memory of Richard Junior.

This mural was 12 feet by 16 feet painted in oil on masonite, in 1976. This fall was the second tier of five. It hangs in the South Apalachian Baptist Church in South Apalachin, New York.

1949 Yosemite Entrance Gate

1949 Richard traveled with his father to Yosemite and other National Parks. When they returned home Richard saw his dad's slide and at 13 painted his first oil painting on canvas of the West Entrance gate.

Signs for local auto show 1953

Richard's high school art teacher once again asked him to do another project. This time he made all the car signs for the local auto show.

Daughter and granddaughter

When Richard's daughter grew up and had her own daughter. Richard painted the two of them in acrylic, trying to make them about the same age.

Richard and Edith's four children

Richard's mother had taken a picture in 1966 in black and white. In the summer of 2010 Richard painted this painting in acrylic and put it in a glass frame.

Richard's wagon

Richard wanted to work on his wagon like his father worked on his car. So in 1939 Richard lifted his wagon upon a wooden stool. Then he got under it holding a flashlight looking for the problem. His dad grabbed his camera and Richard grabbed his paint brush and painted this in Acrylic, years later. Notice this wagon in 1939 was a "Radio Special" which was changed after 1940 to "Radio Flyer". painting was sold.
